Jeera Rice
Jeera rice is a flavored Indian rice dish made by cooking basmati rice with ghee, cumin & other fragrant spices. Making jeera rice is one of the simplest & only needs a handful of ingredients that are mostly pantry staples.
Jeera Rice

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp ghee or olive oil or butter
  • 1 green chili slit and deseeded (optional)
  • 2 to 3 cups water
  • 2 tsp jeera or cumin
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 4 green cardamoms or elaichi
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 cloves
  • Saffron strands
  • Salt as needed

Method

  1. Wash rice a few times until water runs clear.
  2. Then soak it in lot of water for at least 20 to 30 minutes, drain it completely. 
  3. Heat ghee or butter or olive oil a pot.
  4. Sauté bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, cardamoms until they begin to sizzle.
  5. Fry jeera on a low flame until a nice aroma comes out. Add green chilli and saffron.
  6. Transfer drained rice to the pot and roast for 2 to 3 mins.
  7. This helps to bring out the aroma of the rice.
  8. Pour water and add salt. Stir well and taste the water.
  9. Bring water to a boil on a high flame.
  10. Cover and cook on a low to medium heat until water is absorbed & rice is done.
